Conference producers spend enormous resources getting the right venue, speakers, marketing, themes, and staging for events, but often forget that a good event leader/moderator is critical for success. Senior figures in business & industry, media, academia and government are not always good event moderators, often because they have their agendas that they want and need to promote. It is better to get a professional moderator who knows the subject but is also skilled at getting other people to speak and enables the delegates at the event to really participate.

The moderator does 5 important things.

1. Helps shape the agenda so that it is clear and has an organising story or narrative.

2. Helps reinforce the significance of the event and the importance of what is being said.

3. Makes the debate lively and dynamic.

4. Maintains the pace of the event and fosters momentum.

5. Draws conclusions and shapes the direction after the event.
